Fitts
served
three
terms
as
District
Attorney
for
Los
Angeles
County
, from
1928
until
1940
,
when
John
F
.
Dockweiler
succeeded
him. He was
indicted
for
bribery
and
perjury
during
his
tenure
as
District
Attorney
after
dropping
charges
of
statutory
rape
that had been
made
against
a
friend
and
local
businessman
,
John
P
.
Mills
,
though
he was
acquitted
of
all
charges
two
years
later
.
Guy
McAfee
began
his
career
as a
Los
Angeles
policeman
, but
left
the
police
department
to
become
a
businessman
on the
Sunset
Strip
,
where
he
ran
nightclubs
that
served
illegal
alcohol
and had
concealed
gambling
tables
. In
1939
, he
left
Los
Angeles
for
Las
Vegas

he
continued
to
run
nightclubs
and
casinos
