Historical Background |
The Del Rey Players is an all student run theatre company started in 1931 to give Loyola students the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the production process. It offers opportunities for students in directing, designing, writing, set construction, sewing costumes, house managing, stage crew, and performing. The Del Rey Players is the oldest student organization on campus. When Dolores Hart (aka Dolores Hicks) was a freshman student majoring in Theater Arts at Marymount College in 1956, she played the feminine lead in "Joan of Lorraine" at Loyola University. Hart made her screen debut as an actress in the 1957 film "Loving You" with Elvis Presley. At the height of her career in 1963, Dolores Hart became a Roman Catholic nun at the Benedictine Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Connecticut. Reverend Mother Dolores Hart, O.S.B., has been the Abbey's Dean of Education since 1972. |
