Historical Background
Nicknamed
"The
Duke
of
Del
Rey
"
while
a
student
at
Loyola
University
,
Don
Klosterman
played
quarterback
for the
Lions
,
setting
a
record
with
4,481
passing
yards
over
his
3
years
on the
team
.
After
graduating
,
Klosterman
went
on to
play
for the
Cleveland
Browns
and the
Los
Angeles
Rams
before
trading
to the
Calgary
Stampeders
in the

. In
1957
,
while

in

,
Klosterman
swerved
to
avoid
a
fallen

.
Told
he would
never

again
,
Klosterman
defied
the
odds
,
recovering
enough
over
the
next
year
to
walk
with the
aid
of a
cane
. And
while
his
career
as a
player
ended
on the
day
of his
accident
,
Klosterman
returned
to the

NFL
as a
general
manager
for the
Los
Angeles
Chargers
, the
Dallas
Texans
, the
Houston
Oilers
, the
Baltimore
