Historical Background |
Loyola Marymount University traces its origins back to St. Vincent's College for boys, founded in 1865 by the Vincentian Fathers. When this school closed in 1911, a faculty of Jesuits from Santa Clara University arrived to take over operations of St. Vincent's College, moved the school to Highland Park, and re-formed as Los Angeles College. Due to rapid growth, the college moved to a new location in 1917, which later became the campus of Loyola High School. The college incorporated as Loyola College of Los Angeles in 1918. Graduate instruction began in 1920 with the foundation of a separate law school. The college moved to the present Westchester campus in 1929, achieving university status one year later. Loyola University of Los Angeles and Marymount College partnered with St. Joseph College of Orange began affiliation in 1968, and officially merged into Loyola Marymount University in 1973. |
