Description	Abandoned Center Schoolhouse in Owens Valley. Overturned outhouse at left. Inscription in ink on back of photograph by J. D. Black: "Abandoned Center School House (note wood-pecked holes on side walls." Title supplied by cataloger.
Historical Background	To meet the need for water of its growing population, the City of Los Angeles began buying land and corresponding water rights in the Owens Valley in 1905. In 1913, the great Los Angeles Aqueduct was completed to bring Owens Valley water to the city. The City of Los Angeles' purchase of valley farms and ranches in the Owens Valley led to a correlative decline in civic institutions like public schools, perhaps because of a decrease in population. A resident of Big Pine and leader of resistance against Los Angeles, J. D. Black (1893-1960) used this photograph to document the deterioration of the valley under Los Angeles rule.
