lists

Inyo
County
in the
1920s
record
a
John
Utter
living
in
Big
Pine
,
California
,
whose
occupations
included
mining
in
1922
and
ranching
by
1926
. The
ghost
town
of
Chrysopolis
,
California
,
is
located
in the
Inyo
Range
of the
Owens
Valley
. The
original
settlement
began
in the
early
1860s
but
soon
withered
away
, and the
name
was
applied
to a
mining
area
,
which
received
renewed
development
in the
early
1900s
because
of the
expansion
of
mining
in
Death
Valley
,
Tonopah
, and
Goldfield
. This
photograph
probably
records
mining
at
Chrysopolis
in the
1910s
, the
latter
stage
of the
intensified
mining
that had
begun
in the
early
1900s
.
