Historical Background
An
immigrant
from
French
Canada
,
John
Black
went
to
Virginia
City
,
Nevada
, in the
late
1870s
or
early
1880s
to
work
in the
mines
. There he
met
Rose
Carrol
(1861-1940)
,
whom
he
married
at
unknown
date
.
After
living
in the
mining
town
of
Bodie
,
where
he had
some
kind
of
partnership
with a
John
A.
McAlpin
, the
couple
moved
to
Bishop
,
California
, of the
Owens
Valley
, in
1886
. In
1888
John
Black
operated
a
saloon
there. In
1902
, he
moved
his
family
to
Big
Pine
,
where
he
ran
another
saloon
. From the
late
1890s
until
his
death
in
1923
,
it
is
known
that he had
mining
interests
in
Mono
County
and the
Chrysopolis
,
California
area
.
Voter
registration
lists
from
Big
Pine
in
1922
record
his
occupation
as
miner
.
John
and
Rose
Black
were the
parents
of
Rosalind
and
J
.
D
.
Black
.
John
Black
was
58
years
of
age
at his
death
. The "
Dowe
" of
Dowe
Photo
is
possibly
either
Arthur
W
.
Dowe
, a
photographer
and
portrait
artist
in
San
Francisco
from
1878
through
1897
; or
Lewis
Dowe
, a
traveling
